His colleagues present this token of their esteem and of their gratitude for his excellence in patient care, research, education, and leadership; for dedicating himself to providing cutting-edge management of his patients, always with a personable, caring, and compassionate approach; for his exemplary contributions to preclinical and clinical research that has led to the understanding of disease mechanisms, novel targets for drug development, and the development of new medications, biologics, and devices that have provided substantial advances in science and patient care, and publishing in the highest impact medical journals in the world; for being known as a master educator, directing courses and delivering hundreds of lectures in dozens of countries, and serving as a visiting professor at locations across the globe; for founding the headache fellowship program at Mayo Clinic Arizona and mentoring numerous trainees from around the continent that have emerged as successful clinicians, scientists, educators, advocates, and leaders; for hosting, training, and mentoring visiting clinician scientists from around the world; for holding the highest positions in the fields of headache, concussion, and neurology, including his leadership as President of the American Headache Society, President of the International Headache Society, Chairman of the American Brain Foundation, Founder and Chairman of the International Headache Society’s Global Patient Advocacy Coalition, Co-Chair of the World Federation of Neurology World Brain Day, and Editor-in-Chief of Cephalalgia; for founding and chairing the American Migraine Foundation, the major patient advocacy organization in the United States; and for his steadfast loyalty to that living body of high principles that were initiated by the Founders, William James Mayo, M.D., and Charles Horace Mayo, M.D., and that now clearly are recognized as the ideals of Mayo Clinic.
