His colleagues present this token of their esteem and of their gratitude for his contribution as a master clinical Gastroenterologist, doing everything possible to help patients and colleagues from all over the world; for educating scores of trainees as an exemplar, with many becoming Mayo Faculty; for producing ten highly acclaimed Professional Development Conferences as Course Director; for being Outstanding Faculty Member at symposia throughout the United States and across four continents; for being Principal Investigator of multiple prevention and early detection of colorectal neoplasia projects including assisting development of “Cologuard” from concept to a clinical examination; for being a leader in planning Mayo Clinic Hospital; for helping create the lauded Mayo Clinic Health Plan where all members were treated as his own patients; for facing tumultuous times with wisdom and resolute vision as Vice-Chair, Board of Governors; for transforming Continuous Professional Development as Associate Dean; for crisscrossing the country as a Mayo spokesperson and being a founder and leader of Mayo Clinic Care Network; for guiding public policy as Arizona Legislative Affairs Medical Director; for serving patients and society with recognition by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and the American College of Gastroenterology for two terms as Arizona Governor; for unbounded love and devotion to his family; for passions of birding, photography, fishing, and travel; and for his steadfast loyalty to that living body of high principles that were initiated by the Founders, William James Mayo, M.D., and Charles Horace Mayo, M.D., and that now clearly are recognized as the ideals of Mayo Clinic.
