His colleagues present this token of their esteem and of their gratitude for his incredible contributions to the field of hepatobiliary and pancreas surgery during his forty-one year career; for his mastery of disease science, practical application of surgery, technical skills, and compassionate patient care; for unsurpassed mastery of surgical anatomy; for his accomplishments in advancing surgical technique and improving patient outcomes; for his dedication to the education of hundreds of residents, fellows and junior staff as their mentor, program director and colleague; for transforming a complex abdominal surgery fellowship into a world renowned Hepatobiliary and Pancreas Surgery Fellowship; for his surgical pearls and pointed contribution at conferences from the back corner seat; for his voluminous contributions to advance surgery through research; for his exuberant common sense and the ability to redirect discussions to what matters most; for his passion in cross-word puzzles, hunting and marathons that has inspired countless apprentices; for his genuine care, devotion and dedication to his colleagues; and for his steadfast loyalty to that living body of high principles that were initiated by the Founders, William James Mayo, M.D., and Charles Horace Mayo, M.D., and that now clearly are recognized as the ideals of Mayo Clinic.
