His colleagues present this token of their esteem and of their gratitude for his extraordinary contributions to the creation of new knowledge, implementation of innovative practices, and mentorship of colleagues in scholarly activities that have dramatically benefited our patients and the specialty of anesthesiology; his remarkable research efforts that have increased our understanding of the anesthetic effects on respiratory physiology; for his sustained and important studies that have led to improved perioperative tobacco control; for his seminal findings on the impact of anesthetics on the neurologic development of infants and young children as well as cognition in the elderly; for his leadership of education-related research; for his contributions to improving postgraduate medical education and performance assessment within Mayo Clinic and as Director and President of the American Board of Anesthesiology; for his successful mentorship of undergraduates, medical students, residents, post-doctoral graduates, and colleagues; for his leadership and service roles within Mayo Clinic and nationally in both research and education; for modeling what it is to be a stellar physician-scientist; for his recognition by the American Society of Anesthesiologists of his contributions to the scholarly pursuit of knowledge with its Excellence in Research Award; for his passion for improving the perioperative care of children; for his love of life and his devotion to his family; and for his steadfast loyalty to that living body of high principles that were initiated by the Founders, William James Mayo, M.D., and Charles Horace Mayo, M.D., and that now clearly are recognized as the ideals of Mayo Clinic.
