His colleagues present this token of their esteem and of their gratitude for his clinical and research expertise in the management of inflammatory bowel disease; for his publication in the New England Journal of Medicine of a landmark study on the treatment of ulcerative colitis with mesalamine; for his development and validation of the Mayo Score for ulcerative colitis that is now the standard reference for ulcerative colitis disease activity worldwide, for research trials and for clinical practice; for his expertise in gastrointestinal endoscopy with excellence in both the technical aspects of procedures and providing lucid, detailed reports of the procedures that facilitate optimal clinical care; for his co-development of percutaneous endoscopic gastroscopy at Mayo Clinic; for his years of administrative leadership in the endoscopy practice; for his mentoring of Gastroenterology fellows in inflammatory bowel disease and endoscopy; for his superb care and compassion for patients with inflammatory bowel disease; for his courteous, collegial, respectful and inclusive attitude towards colleagues and support staff; for his dedication to his family; for his love of the year round wonders and beauty of Minnesota, particularly at his lakeside cabin in northern Minnesota; and for his steadfast loyalty to that living body of high principles that were initiated by the Founders, William James Mayo, M.D., and Charles Horace Mayo, M.D., and that now clearly are recognized as the ideals of Mayo Clinic.
