His colleagues present this token of their esteem and of their gratitude for his consistency of excellence in all phases of his career, earning significant, distinguishing awards at each career milestone; for his national and international recognition as an expert in the prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer, for his research insights, dedication, and relentless commitment to transforming the approach to screening for colorectal cancer, and establishing the groundwork that led to providing affordable access for the early detection of gastrointestinal malignancies for all patients; for his exceptional thoughtful, caring, and compassionate approach to every patient he encountered; for his mentorship and guidance to colleagues throughout his career; for his leadership and medical directorship of numerous Mayo Clinic subspecialty clinics, and programs that support innovation and wellness for all, including the Center for Innovation, the Office of Wellness, The Preventive Services Clinic, and The Healthy Living Program and Center; for advancing Mayo Clinic Global Business Solutions into a position of international prominence; for his Hall of Fame athletic career, and his love of competition involving colleagues on the diamond, or around the poker table; for his enduring love and devotion to his family, his profound enjoyment of the natural world around him, and especially the sunsets viewed from the family lake cabin; and for his steadfast loyalty to that living body of high principles that were initiated by the Founders, William James Mayo, M.D., and Charles Horace Mayo, M.D., and that now clearly are recognized as the ideals of Mayo Clinic.
